Van Lang University students won second prize in the 3rd Korean Speaking Contents in 2020

(VLU, October 01, 2020) - On 30 September, after surpassing the contestants from other universities and colleges, Tran Khanh Nguyen Duy - Oriental Studies student of course 23 (Specialized in Korean Studies) of Van Lang University won second prize.

The Korean Speaking Contest was organized by the Institute of Korean Linguistics in HCMC and certain universities in Vietnam. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the contest was postponed from 01 August to 30 September 2020. According to the contest’s regulations, each university might send one student to participate in the contest. The contestant must choose between two topics :Korea in my imagination” and “How to learn Korean”.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Deputy Head of the Oriental Studies division (specialized in Korean Studies) - VLU’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities said: “The lecturers decided to have Quyen Di attended the contest thanks to her fluency in speaking Korea and self-confidence.”

Based on her experience, Quyen Di chose the topic “How to learn Korean” as the topic of debate. For this topic, Quyen Di had told her own story of learning Korean. She was once mocked by a Korean friend for her bad speaking skill, therefore, she decided to create a context, where she could speak Korean regularly to improve herself. Her efforts resulted in outstanding advancement in Korean Speaking skills.

During the contest, Quyen Di always received support and encouragement from her lecturer. When she was brainstorming the ideas, she wrote down, translated to Korean, then asked her lecturers for feedback and practise many times to guarantee the best performance.

The lively, fluent and confident display of Quyen Di has won her the second prize, which was exactly what she was aiming for.

Established in 2017, the VLU’s Oriental Studies division consists of three specializations, which are China Studies, Japan Studies and Korea Studies delivering in practical methods. In November 2017, Van Lang University signed the Memorandum of Understanding with GwangJu University and then in October 2018 with Nam Seoul University. The cooperation allows Oriental Studies students to go on either exchange or joint program with 2+2 or 3+1 mode.
