Van Lang student won second prize in 3rd Korean speaking contest in Vietnam, 2020

(VLU - October 1, 2020) On September 30, Tran Khanh Quyen Di (23th term, Oriental Studies (majoring in Korean Studies - Van Lang University) won many candidates from universities, colleges and took the second prize in final round of 3rd Korean speaking contest in Vietnam.

The Korean speaking contest in Vietnam is organized by the Korean Language Institute in Ho Chi Minh City in coordination with Vietnamese universities. Due to the complicated situation of Covid-19, the test date has been changed from August 1 to September 30, 2020. Upon the organizer’s request, each school appoints a student as representative to participate in the competition. Candidates choose one of two themes for their speaking: "Korea in my imagination" and "Experiences in learning Korean".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Deputy Head of Department of Oriental Studies (majoring in Korean Studies) - Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Van Lang University, said: “During the class time, the teachers chose Quyen Di to participate in the contest thanks to the ability to speak Korean fluently with her self-confidence ”.

The special prize belonged to the University of Education of Ho Chi Minh City, and the third prize went to the Lac Hong University, the University of Foreign Languages ​​and Information Technology, HCM City, University of Economics and Finance, Thu Duc College of Technology.

From her own experience, Quyen Di chose the topic "Experiences in learning Korean" for her speech. On stage, Quyen Di told her own story of learning Korean. When a Korean friend criticized her for her poor Korean speaking ability, she tried herself to practice speaking. Every day she often speaks Vietnamese sentence with one Korean to practice speaking skills. As a result, she made improvement in speaking Korean.

During Quyen Di's participation in the contest, she always received the support and companionship from the teachers. “After forming an idea, I write it down, translate it into Korean, ask my teacher for advice and practice speaking many times to show the best test.”

The lively, fluent rhetoric and her self-confidence helped Quyen Di get the second prize in the end, exactly as her target from the beginning when joining the competition.

Established in 2017, the Department of Oriental Studies of Van Lang University has 3 majors in application-oriented training: Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies.

In November 2017, Van Lang University signed a cooperation agreement with GwangJu University. In October 2018, Van Lang signed a cooperation agreement with South Seoul University (Korea). Students of Oriental Studies have the opportunity for exchange program in Korea with the course 2+2 (2 years at VLU and 2 years in Korea) or 3+1 (3 years at VLU and 1 year in Korea).
