VLU Tourism Skills Club: A wide range of skills for students of tourism

(Admission Office – Van Lang, September 11th, 2018 ) –“Tourism Skills Club” was established at the beginning of the school year 2018-2019, which is a combination of English Club and Professional Club-Faculty of Tourism. Only after 2 months of launching, the club has shown its youth with a variety of activities- which help to develop skills for students in the Faculty of Tourism with well-planed programs and prestigious guests.

30/10/2018: Career orientation workshop with representatives from Minor Hotels

Minor Hotels Group owns major brands such as: Anatara, AVANI, Oaks, Tivoli, Elewana Collection; There are over 20,000 rooms in the system of 160 hotels, resort facilities and luxurious accommodation. In Vietnam, Minor Group has developed in many provinces such as Hai Phong, Quy Nhon, Hoi An and Mui Ne. In previous years, the Faculty of Tourism- Van Lang University used to lead the first year students to take the practical training session at Anatara Mui Ne. However, the orientation workshop in the afternoon of 30/10/2018 was the first time that Minor Group and VLU Faculty of Tourism cooperated with the purpose of developing personnel for tourism sector.

vlu tourism skills club 002Representatives of Minor Group including Ms. Ngo Thi Bich Van - Hoi An Anantara Resort Human Resources Manager; Ms. Truong Mong Kim Thoa – Quy Nhon Anantara Villas and Avani Resort Human Resources Manager; Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu Anh - Mui Ne Anantara Resort Human Resources Manager attended the program.

Through the program, the Faculty and the group representatives wish to clearly orient students about specific occupations in the main sections of the hotel, such as: Reception, Restaurant and Chamber. Guest speakers also analyze the difficulties in choosing jobs when studnets have no experience, choosing foreign languages ​​to suit the needs of tourists. At the same time, the group also provides first-year students in Hospitality Management with information about the working environment and conditions for internship placement at the Minor Hotels Group.

What are the requirements of behaviors, professional skills and soft skills that are needed in the workplace? What should students be prepared in order to be able to succeed in the hospitality business? Those are the main questions from students when choosing the Tourism in general, and hospitality management in particular.
Through the workshop, the group highly appreciates the career orientation ability of students in Faculty of Tourism- Van Lang University and expresses their desire to cooperate in developing human resources at Minor Group. In the future, students will have more access to soft skills in Hospitality Management, in the orientation of the training program of Faculty of Tourism.

06/11/2018: Talkshow "I DID IT"

Qualified English is not only a prerequisite for graduation but also an opportunity for students to find work with attractive salary. English is a compulsory language for all occupations, especially in tourism sector. For tour guides, the English ability is a great opportunity, a tool for students to assert themselves with businesses and foreign visitors. The talk show "I DID IT" organized by Tourism Club has provided students with inspiration and  a stronger motive for learning English at university.

vlu tourism skills club 004Mr. Nguyen Cung – the guest speaker of the talk show is the Director of TSES Foreign Language Center, with more than 10 year experience as an international tour guide. He inspires many young people to come to the English for Tourism and come closer to success.

He said: "English enhances the value of human beings. The opportunity is to prepare, to set short-term and long-term goals, and to ask ourselves" Why do I have to learn English? ", and set time to speak English. Then, each person has to form the habit of learning English.

Some of the "tips" for English learning is shared by the speaker make students interested:- Listening is the first skill to focus on when you start learning English. You can improve listening skill through some English language learning websites (eg VOAlearningenglish.com). You can choose your favorite topic in the link and listen for it for about 10 times, pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation of the reader to improve your pronunciation

- Each day, you should spend 2 hours of active English learning. You spend about an hour practicing listening 10 times, then read the content followed, take another 30 minutes to translate and understand the meaning, and 30 minutes to learn new words.
- The remaining time, you hear English passively and do not need to understand the content. For such 29 consecutive days, your English will improve significantly. From that foundation, you can begin to learn the phrase, grammar knowledge. The most important thing is that you have to be persistent and form the habit of learning on time so that your learning will be effective.

The two-hour Talkshow helps students to find more goals, reasons and  motivation to improve English for future learning and career.
