The 2nd Science Conference on Applied Biotechnology - Van Lang University

(VLU, August 2, 2020) - On July 29, 2020, Van Lang University organized the second Science Conference on Applied Biotechnology with a lot of relevant scientific information in the field of Biotechnology  applied in Medicine, Pharmaceutical, Food, and Environment.

The 2nd Science Conference on Applied Biotechnology of Van Lang University was attended by representatives of research institutes, enterprises, and universities of Biotechnology in Ho Chi Minh City. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu – Rector of Van Lang University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Kim Oanh – Dean of Faculty of Technology, leaders of all Faculties, Divisions and Departments; lecturers and students of Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering Technology of Van Lang University also participated in the conference.

At the opening speech of the Conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu hoped that the students' research on Biotechnology will be applied in practice and used in life. This will be an opportunity for students to experience  the school's philosophy “learning with practice”.

To start the Conference, Dr. Vu Thi Quyen - Head of Biotechnology Department of Van Lang University reported and shared the goal of training high-quality Biotechnology engineers, who love their jobs, are passionate about science and creativity. Van Lang University is currently updating and improving the quality of lessons, textbooks, and supplementary materials according to modern technology, digitalization in Biotechnology management and  agricultural products- food, pharmaceutical management , traceability in origin of products...; promptly update the training program according to the nation’s priority programs on technology application, sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural production, contributing to the forming of the agricultural product processing, to ensure safety and quality in pharmaceutical.

After the  report of Dr. Vu Thi Quyen, the workshop continued with 5 presentations:

  • Presentation 1: "Smart Agriculture" - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mai Thanh Phung, Vice President of Vietnam Farm and Enterprise Association
  • Presentation 2: "The Application of Biotechnology in Food Processing" - MSc. Nguyen Van Thu (General Director of G.C. Food Joint Stock Company), Ms. Huynh Thi Thanh Nga (Head of R&D Department - G.C Food Joint Stock Company)
  • Presentation 3: "Changes in metabolic set and intestinal microbiota during in vitro fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates" - MSc. Vu Cong Danh (Faculty of Technology- Van Lang University) and Dr. Nguyen Ha Dieu Trang (Institute of Biotechnology and Food)
  • Presentation 4: "Application of Biotechnology in the prevention of Covid-19 epidemic" - Dr. Hoang Quoc Cuong (Deputy Director of Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City), MSc. Hoang Thuy Linh (Deputy Director of the Center for Calibration, Testing and Verification of Laboratory Equipment, Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City)
  • Presentation 5: Research of students (Tran Nguyen Phuc Nhan, Truong Thi Thuy Nga - students majoring in  Biotechnology at Van Lang University)

Among the experts presenting at the conference, there was  Dr. Hoang Quoc Cuong - one of the frontline doctors at the time of the second outbreak of SARS - CoV2 in Vietnam, sharing with the teachers and students of the Faculty of Technology, Van Lang University about the applications of Biotechnology in the Covid prevention.

Prof. Dr. Mai Thanh Phung helped us understand more about smart agriculture 4.0, the efficiency of agriculture 4.0; agricultural trend 4.0 in the world; reasons for agriculture 4.0 development in Vietnam; potential industries approaching agriculture 4.0 in Vietnam and offered some suitable proposals.

In 2020, besides Environmental Engineering Technology and Biotechnology, Van Lang University's Faculty of Technology continued to open four first undergraduate majors in Vietnam:
1/ Green Design major
2/ Enterprise Environment Management major
3/ Biotechnology of Medicine and Pharmacy
4/ Biotechnology Administration All new majors follow the orientation of practical application of scientific research in various fields of life and approach the actual requirements of the labor market.
