Van Lang University co-hosts the workshop titled “Preserving traditional architectural heritage in Urban Vietnam”

(VLU, 06/11/2021) On the occasion of the 13th anniversary of Vietnam Urban Day, on November 5, 2021, the Institute of Cultural and Development Research of Van Lang University in collaboration with the ASEAN Center for Human Resources Research and Training (HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities) and the Vietnam - Southeast Asia Friendship Association, The Union of Ho Chi Minh City Friendship Organizations co-organized the workshop "Preserving traditional architectural heritage in Urban Vietnam: The basis of reasoning and lessons learned from ASEAN countries".

The workshop welcomed more than 235 scholars, experts, managers, lecturers and students from training, research and cultural development units from 07 countries: Vietnam, Singapore, USA, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia.

Dr. Le Hoang Dung, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (National University, Ho Chi Minh City) said that the program received more than 40 presentations (English and Vietnamese) with rich and diverse topics. Of which, 30 articles were selected to edit and ranked in 04 main groups of solutions and recommendations:

Group 1: Architectural relics and cultural values

  • Spreading the value of relics and cohesive cultural characteristics (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City), intersection / transformation (Hue), imprint (Tay Ninh, old Saigon)
  • The interest and role of the community impacts the monument for the community.

Group 2: Management of architectural heritage in urban areas

  • Industrial Revolution 4.0, digital transformation (History Museum), Ho Chi Minh City), applying new technologies: 3D, BIM lab, Scan Laser, VR/XR
  • Regulations, priority levels/items should be more concerned with cultural heritage.
  • Management of tourism objectives (Hoi An), education (HCMC) and sustainable development (Hue and Hoi An)

Group 3: Preserving, promoting values and creating urban identity

  • Multi-dimensional multidisciplinary access (economy & society, Ho Chi Minh City), architectural heritage in adaptive urban areas (Ho Chi Minh City);
  • Solutions in protecting and promoting the values of objects/intangibles, mechanisms/policies, the role of people, authorities and parties.

Group 4: Learning from ASEAN and global communities

  • The role of the ASEAN community, the international tourism organization
  • Policy systems, conservation activities, climate change, flooding and technical infrastructure responses (ASEAN countries).

During the workshop, 5 Vietnamese speakers and 2 international guests have shared their professionals. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu – Van Lang University (VLU)’s Principal commented: “The preserving traditional architectural heritage in Urban Vietnam is the responsibility of everyone. In addition to scientific values, the research presented at the workshop will contribute to preserving heritage in the city, the country and for the next generation.”

The speakers have brought us in-depth knowledge, expressing the value of monuments and cultural characteristics brought to society and community. In addition, a number of studies with updated values, combining technological factors also show the adaptability and potential for sustainable development of heritage right in the era of industrial revolution 4.0.

Also, through experiments and things gained from local and global nations, the experts showed a lot of solutions and recommendations for preserving as well as promoting the value of physical/intangible heritages in Urban Vietnam.

According to Dr. Ngo Minh Hung - Institute for Cultural And Development Research at Van Lang University, there were 29 selected research works will be published in the publication "Preserving traditional architectural heritage in Urban Vietnam: The basis of reasoning and lessons learned from ASEAN countries" in the near future. This publication will actively contribute to the conservation and promotion of heritage values, promoting the process of bringing national cultural identity into modern urban areas and sustainable development.
