The interesting point of the morning session: Dr. Ngo Minh Hung was the Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johannes Widodo’s student, the director of Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Asian Architectural and Urban Heritage in Melaka (Malaysia) and the Executive Editor of JSEAA (Journal of Southeast Asian Architecture) at the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore. Dr. Ngo Minh Hung is Head of International Cooperation and Scientific Research department, Van Lang University.

As Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johannes Widodo suggested in the beginning of the program, the scientific seminars Architecture-Planning occur under comforatable atmosphere. There are debates; however, the speakers directly discuss, the idea sync together, and supports one another.

The Smart - Innovation City which is the development trend of international countries. The project “Building Ho Chi Minh City become a smart City” for the period 2017-2020, the vision to 2025 are approved that show the trend and passionate of globalization, growing and breakthrough, solving the urban’s problem. The scientific seminar with many enthusiastic writings of scientists to show love, responsibility credit to the wealthy development of the old Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is now and many coming years.

11 reports are presented divided into 3 groups of content: Culture and History – Engineering and Technology – Heritage. Dr. Nguyen Quoc Tuan show his interested in the structure of the program which covers 3 categories of main content, especially the report “Saigon Identities in Southern Vietnam of Dr Nguyen Phuong Hau which belonging to the content “Heritage” of subcommittees in the afternoon session which uses for the open of morning session – that is the important remind: the progress of smart city which cannot be ignored, underestimate  the past. “Heritage is the genetic resource”

City “Smart” or “Smarter” is the absolute definition due to the technological advancement and social conditions, … Through the contributed discussions, all the exchange ideas of subcommittees, the seminars confidently recognized: Ho Chi Minh City now basically has fulfilled the essential elements to build a smart city. The further problem for discussion: should we build the unique brand for city, or follow the model of modern city in Europe and region?

Assoc. Dr. Johannes Widodo – one the initiatives conducting research on architecture – urban planning, asserts: the city should consider the sustainability to conserve and pass to the next generation; human centered space; living in the busy modern city and a green architecture.

DH van lang tbkt 4Architect. Michael Ling Tiing Soon (Maia Integrated Design & DPZ Asia, Malaysia) presented about “Using principles of new ubarnism approach in designing a smart City”. This is one the interesting presentation.

Architect. Michael Ling Tiing Soon introduced the new urbanism approach in designing smart City which is appropriate for developing urban environment for Ho Chi Minh City. Thus, it helps to achieve digitalization, the intelligence and improve smart City, human is responsible for the infrastructure and the related smart model (smart parking, smart traffic management, smart lighting system, smart rubbish solution,…). The model of new urban improve the connectivity, motivate interactivity and create the new standard of smart behavior from human to human.

DH van lang tbkt 6MSc. Andrew Stiff (RMIT University, Vietnam campus) presented the topic that caused curiosity in the 2nd discussion panel: Tacit Cultural Context: Branding smart City

Authors presented the research project on the urban structure of District 4, recorded the image “the normal City” under the creative scope. If it could develop the image of the City, including its uniqueness to create the storage of observable image? The localized approaches and contextual fulfillment which introduce Ho Chi Minh City under global scope to honor the richness in culture and the feature of the City, that is the iconic of smart City.

The international scholars bring to the Seminars of Van Lang University various modern approaches toward the problem and unlimited thinking. Scientists, architects of Vietnam have the advantages of experience on traditional research methods, but it requires high efforts of ratiocination and practices.

vl25 kien truc 5Dr. Le Quang Ninh (Van Lang University), Assoc, prof. Dr. Phan Thi Hong Xuan (University of Social Science & Humanities of Ho Chi Minh City), Dr. Nguyen Thi Hau (Scientific Association of History of Ho Chi Minh City) are the reputational name among Vietnam’s heritage researching field.

Saigon – Ho Chi Minh City after 320 years contained the sources of local architectural heritage, Indochina and richness of modern tropical. Vietnamese scientists have the special attention to historical – cultural elements of ancient urban Ben Nghe – Gia Dinh, a special Saigon urban inside dynamic Ho Chi Minh City, opened, transforming. The original heritage in the smart developing trend that requires the inheriting, transforming and upgrading that combines the past, the present and the future of the dynamic and innovative city.

The technical supports mentioned in the discussion seminars, such as: basic tool BIM (Dr. Le Hung Tien – Engineering Faculty, Van Lang University), the information management model for the smart connectivity society (M.A. Pham Ngoc Duy, M.A Ly Thi Huyen Chau – Faculty of Information Technology, Van Lang University) … Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johannes Widodo highly appraises the construction that optimize resource usage and saving when constructing smart City.

2 discussion sessions of Subcommittees of Architecture – Planning occurring with the richness of academic content, work efficiency, illustrate further research problem require cooperation. Presentation in the seminars of Van Lang University, which is valuable reference material for scientist, policy legislator of the City. The role of scientist in the project constructing smart Ho Chi Minh City, creativity is important because the process need systematically approaching to conserve the reality of the past, reassuring the balance between the transformation and future development.
