The very first undergraduates majoring in Interactive Media Graphics have received their degree.

(Admission Office Văn Lang, 08/7/2018) – There comes another graduation ceremony in July. In the cheerful celebration of the first 20 generations graduating from Van Lang University, the school congratulates the very first students of Interactive Media Graphic Design on their graduation. The Faculty of Industrial Arts has achieved successfully their attempt to catch up with new trend in training designers.

Interactive Media Graphic Design which is a part of Graphic Design, Faculty of Industrial Arts enrolled the first course from the beginning of 2014. The number of students applying for this course has gradually increased over the past few years- which is much in evidence for the need of the learners and the right training strategy of the Faculty.

This is an exciting 3D design field, but it is extremely stressful (about ideas, time, finance…), especially, when the pressure of specialized subjects is increasingly heavier since the 2nd academic year. There were 16 students in the first course of Interactive Media Graphic Design. After 4 years, 7 of them have successfully defended their graduation project and 5 have completely finished their training program.

dhtt 001On 8th of June, 2018, the graduation project defense of 44 students majoring in Graphic Design- course 20 took place on the 7th floor, campus 2, Van Lang University. Among them are 7 students of Interactive Media Graphic Design.

Although there are just a modest numbers of projects, the results gained by the students of Interactive Media Graphic Design are so impressive- which is a very positive message. 5 over 7 projects have achieved over 8.0, and 3 students have gained 9.0 (round)

Graduation project- the completed artworks

The students of Interactive Media Graphic Design have experienced 8 interesting semesters (equivalent to 4 school years) in the training program. Their very first projects were the assignments or final term projects ranging from simple to complicated ones. (calligraphy, Basic decoration, Photography, script writing, Video cinematograph, Design Visualization, 3D Design, Interface Design(Web+ App), acoustic design, Software Engineering, Animation Techniques, Character Design, Advanced VFX..)

However, the product of an Interactive Media Graphic Design specialist is only completed after the students complete the all 8 semesters of the training program. Graduation projects in any form (MV, TVC, short films, animation ...) also require the most knowledge and skills over 4 years of study. Students have about 5 months (in semester 8) to complete the Graduation Project - a modest amount of time to nurture ideas and perfect an Interactive Media Graphic Design product,  because a graduation project not only includes a video (main product) but also an attached identity as Traditional Graphic Design.

dhtt 002The Graduation project “Short Film: Khuc Thuy Du” designed by Duong Hue Phuc (Instructor: Nguyen Quoc Thanh) has been made for nearly 7 months, from the preparation stage to the location survey, selection of costume and actors. The project includes 3 posters, a gift set, and other art graphic stock. The film presents the love story between the poor painter and the prostitute in the context of ancient Saigon. Phuc shared: “the most memorable and difficult time was the Onset stage when our crew worked hard in the sun and the rain outside, acted, set up again and again. It was so tired, but a lot of fun”! “the project “Khuc Thuy Du” was highly appreciated by the judge, achieved 9.18 points.

The "Z Cemetery" 3D cartoon project of Nguyen Minh Hong Huy (Instructor: artist: Phan Vu Linh) was rated 9.21 points. The desire to make a 5 minute short film has been shortened to fit the deadline of 6 months, including the pre-graduation stage (semester 7), but still miss the deadline. For the animation genre, all the technical aspects require elaboration and precision so as not to reveal the defects of the characters. All the stages have been completed “timely” and summited right before the judges started the preliminary examination. Z Cemetery is a novelty product about the world in the soul of every child. The cartoon was accompanied by lovely and special mock- up of characters; a head model made of Wacom pen holders, bonsai pots and candy canisters, as well as a set of tables and chairs bring dark colors and haunting concept- which is suitable for the work space of a 3D Artist. What an impressive and dedicate project!

dhtt 003Animation project: Bus 40 - the surprising journey of Tran Thi Dung (Instructor: Master .Phan Bao Chau).

dhtt 004MV project: On our Way by Nguyễn Bá Đoan Nhu (Instructor: Master. Phan Bảo Châu).

At first glance, the exhibit booth of graduate students in Interactive Media Graphic Design is quite similar to one of Traditional Graphic Design. However, they have to work harder under a lot of pressure in order to have a rich identity system with mainstream video.  This hard work was offset by the lively and perfect display space.

Graduation project - awareness and maturity

Not many faculties are favorable for students working freelancers from year 2 as for Interactive Media Graphic Design. All of these students at Van Lang have utilized the skills of filmmaking, photography, film recording learned at school to participate in small projects outside or to create semi-professional work teams. "Toiling into" the actual work is both a compulsory requirement of the curriculum, as well as the conditions needed to be better in their future profession.

dhtt 006

To make a graduation project about "Shan Snow Tea" - a film about 400-year-old tea in Pang Co village (Suoi Giang commune, Van Chan district, Yen Bai province), Nguyen Doan Nhu Anh team had to locally film to ensure image quality and stick to the storyline. Due to the deadline pressure, the requirement to shorten the time to avoid the additional cost of renting machinery, accommodation, as well as the environment and the weather, the recording process was hampered, so this is really a difficult time for the team. Finally, the graduation project got 8.92 points (Master Dao Chi Dac guided).

The more difficulties the students encounter with their big project, the more shortcomings they discover. Compared to the end-of-the- module exercises, they are much more demanding, and also need more time and effort. This is really a good result beyond the scores that graduation projects bring to students before graduation.

I have learned a lot through this graduation project and also realized that I still lack of professional experience. In addition, I have learned a lot about patience and humility; it cannot be because of a personal advantage, and then ignores the patience to urge my team to rush. This will not bring good results at all. All must progress slowly and always "In the mood for work"..

Duong Hue Phuc

To me, comments from my teachers are very valuable, because I think later in my life; there is no one who can enthusiastically instruct me like them. Through this project, I have learned a lot of specialized skills. In the future, I will try to perfect the original incomplete plan and continue later episodes of this animation to gain more knowledge, because learning is non-stop. The success of the graduation project is attributed to the feasibility and the reality in the field of Interactive Media Graphic Design, due to the fact that this major is based on need for human resources.

In terms of dynamics and early experience at work, students in Interactive Media Graphic Design are "top" among other faculties at Van Lang. As Ms. Hong Huy said, "We go to work early so we have much experience, and no longer feel the fear of any work that has not done before."  May you always keep the fire in your job, the perfection of work as you did with your graduation project!

Van Lang has marked a milestone in July, 2017 when it had 20 generations of students graduated and matured. The first students of Interactive Media Graphics Design have also matured.
Congratulations to the first student of Interactive Media Graphic Design, Van Lang University officially graduated!
